MERLIN project presented at ARVO 2021

At ARVO 2021 virtual meeting, Muhammad Faizan Shirazi presents the achievments of the MERLIN partners, including the first clinical results.

May 6, 11:15pm CEST, session “Highlights of angiographic imaging”

Multi-modal and multi-scale retinal imaging with angiography

Muhammad Faizan Shirazi, PhD

During his presentation, he shows how gold-standard retinal imaging techniques and cutting-edge adaptive optics technology were successfully combined in a single compact clinical protoype. He will reveal images from patient’s eyes that confirm the performance of the instrument, including cellular resolution in 3 dimensions.

Second installation in clinical center

As of January 28th, the second prototype of the MERLIN instrument is operational at Rigshospitalet, University of Copenhagen.

Imagine Eyes team visited twice the clinical center in Denmark : first to install the device, and then to support the ophthalmologists as they started using it.
As a result, the clinicians could easily capture OCT, SLO, AO-OCT and AO-SLO images with MERLIN when they examined their first patients.

With this second prototype installed, the technical partners will receive more feedback to continue developing the instrument.

MERLIN project to be presented at ICOOR 2020

The 8th International Congress on OCT and OCT angiography in Rome (ICOOR) will be held online on December 18-19.

On Dec 19th, Session 21, at 2:40pm CEST
Prof. Michael Pircher will present the MERLIN project

During his presentation, Prof. Pircher from Medical University of Vienna will reveal the latest images delivered by the MERLIN prototype. He will show how OCT, OCT angiography, SLO and adaptive optics technologies could be combined into a single compact retinal imaging instrument.

For registered attendees, the presentation will be available online until February 2021.

First installation in clinical center

On December 7th, the first prototype of the MERLIN instrument was successfully installed at Quinze-Vingt National Eye Hospital, in Paris.

The clinical team was very excited to receive the device as they can start assessing its performance and usability. The technical partners are looking forward receiving their feedback, which will guide the development of improvements.

MERLIN almost ready for clinical validation

As the design of the MERLIN instrument is complete, the project enters a very exciting phase.

A first prototype unit, fully integrated and equipped with a graphic user interface, has passed safety tests successfully. It delivers OCT, SLO, AO-OCT and AO-SLO images.

After final calibration, Imagine Eyes will transfer this MERLIN unit to the Quinze Vingts National Eye Hospital in Paris. One month later, a second prototype will arrive at the Rigshospitalet in Copenhagen. Clinical validation with  these two sites will then begin.

The collaborative efforts on designing the instrument do not stop with its transfer to the clinical partners. Indeed, the technical partners will continue their developments, to implement improvements and additional functionalities over the course of the clinical validation.

Clinicians try the MERLIN instrument at Imagine Eyes

MERLIN project members from Quinze-Vingts Eye Hospital visited Imagine Eyes last week. For the first time, they could use the MERLIN instrument, in its R&D version.

The optical head did not have a cover, and it was not installed on medical-grade furniture. However the graphic user interface was already implemented. Thanks to that, the clinicians could acquire large field images and then easily zoom on regions of interest using the adaptive optics scan modes.

This first experience with the unfinished prototype was very promising. Engineers in observation felt the clincians’ excitement, and they could collect feedback very useful for next developments.

Dissemination at the i2Eye meeting

On October 12-14, the Innovative Imaging for Eye Disease conference (i2Eye) gathered a hundred speakers and attendees from Europe and North America.

Several speakers presented about multimodal retinal imaging as well as cellular and microvascular imaging using adaptive optics technology. They showed how it enables further understanding diseases such as age-related macular degeneration and retinitis pigmentosa, and help improve clinical care.

For those who missed i2Eye 2020, the program as well as video recordings are available on this page.

Innovative Imaging in Eye Disease meeting organized by MERLIN partner

MERLIN project partners Kate Greive and Michel Paques organize their third Autumn course on Innovative Imaging in Eye Disease, the i²Eye 2020 meeting. The conference will be held online, on October 12-14, 2020.

Abstract submission and free registration open here
Abstract deadline: September 4th

New MERLIN members

INSERM, the National Institute of Health and Medical Research, hired Dr Kiyoko Gocho, ophthalmologist and medical researcher, as well as Dr Josselin Gautier, postdoctoral researcher. They will work on the clinical evaluation of the MERLIN device at the Quinze-Vingts National Eye Hospital.

ARVO presentations by MERLIN partners

The MERLIN partners had 5 presentations planned at the ARVO Annual Meeting and Imaging in the Eye Conference 2020. Abstracts are published in the IOVS journal, a video presentation is also available on ARVO Learn.
